FAQ's

How do i know if my tank has water in it ?

One sure fire way to get an idea if your tank is suffering from water ingress would be a poor burn on your boiler fuel jets, and a build up of carbon on them.

Potentially water in your pipework could freeze in cold weather and expand in any joints this could then cause leaks or air ingress, which will effect the flow through to the boiler.

If you can see sludge in the bottom of the tank, caused by water collecting in the bottom and promoting the growth of algae and sludge, potentially blocking pipework, filters or valves.

How does water get into my fuel storage tank ?

Water can enter a fuel storage tank in several ways. The main reason would be condensation caused by the difference in temperature between the air outside and the air inside the tank. The condensation would build up on the inner walls of the tank then run down into the fuel. It then separates and collects beneath the oil in a layer at the bottom.

Water can also enter the main tank if there are faulty vents, filler caps or ports on the top of the tank.

It can also enter if there is damage to outer walls of the tank.

How can i tell how much water there is in my tank ?

We supply a product called water finding paste, this is painted onto a dip stick, it changes colour when it comes into contact with water. So dipping the dipstick into your tank will allow you to see the depth of the water issue.

How can I remove the water from my tank ?

There are several ways of doing this. After you have determined the extent of the problem with the water finding paste, you can then try one of the following solutions.

Tank sponge – Soaks water from fuel, dropped into the tank with a retrieval cord, left a couple of days it will soak up to 1 Litre of water.

Submersible pump – A 12v submersible pump that can be used with standard garden hose, dropped into the tank and allowed to pump the water out.

Inline water trap filter – a clear bowl water trap filter with a drain tap to drain off water as you see it in the filter bowl.
